An early form of additive manufacturing, or 3D printing as it is better known, began to emerge in the 1980s. But it took more than a decade for the technology to take off. Originally it was used for prototyping. Today, complex components are often 3D printed using plastics and metals and used in everything from jet engines to robots to cars.
