For example, since the early 1990s, the average weight of a car has increased to more than 12 times the weight of its occupants, global flights have quadrupled, primarily for leisure purposes, and new commercial buildings have been demolished and replaced in less than 50 years . Efficiency is about systems and equipment, not engines. We could live a life very similar to today, by replacing certain appliances (like cars and boilers), using half the energy we consume, all electricity, without any obvious asceticism.
