Why another COP?

Hold another COP meeting. Less than three weeks after COP27, the UN climate summit in Egypt, many of the same people gathered in Canada for COP15. Confused? This UN meeting is about biodiversity; last month we talked about climate change. So what is the COP for biodiversity?



The main goal of the delegates in Montreal is to agree on a new ecosystem protection regime, which will be achieved by 2030. Its purpose is to prevent the extinction of plant and animal species, thereby preserving the ecological, genetic and biological diversity upon which life on Earth depends. This is a daunting task. Optimists hope the summit will produce an outcome similar to the 2015 Paris Agreement, in which almost all countries pledged to step up efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb climate change. Pessimists point out that nothing comparable has been achieved in the past 30 years of international biodiversity negotiations.
