Zanzibar coconut prices illustrate Africa's development

Musa Haidar holds a coconut to her ear and shakes it back and forth. Its jiggling delighted a market trader, who returned the large, brown egg to his stall on the outskirts of the city of Zanzibar, the main market on the East African island.



His clients, however, were less than satisfied. A coconut that cost 500 Tanzanian shillings ($0.20) a few years ago now costs 1,500 shillings. This makes it more expensive to make curries or other dishes with coconut milk. "The prices you see," Mr Haidar said, "they're abnormal. Coconuts have become expensive for the locals."
