Bank of Japan shocks investors

Expectations have grown in recent months that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will finally tighten monetary policy in 2023 after years of uncompromising stimulus. Few expected this to happen in 2022. But on Dec. 20, the bank raised the cap on 10-year government bond yields to 0.5% from 0.25%. The Christmas surprise pushed the yen higher - and sparked speculation about what might happen next.



The BOJ has intervened in bond markets since 2016 to keep the 10-year yield around 0%, a policy known as "yield curve control." Technically, the bank is allowing a 25 percentage point swing around its 0% target. But the 0.25% cap is especially important this year as global yields come under upward pressure. The BoJ is now allowing half a percentage point move around zero. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 0.4% from 0.25% following the news, its biggest one-day gain since 2003.
