Birds eat bugs, not the other way around. But Mahmood Kolnegari of the Aveye Dornaye Khakestari Institute in Iran and Connor Panter of the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom saw this role reversal when they set up cameras near the nest of a purple sunbird in Iran's Kerman province. As they report in Ecology and Evolution, their cameras caught footage of a praying mantis preying on a chick. Praying mantises are known to be aggressive, but this attack took the researchers by surprise. They thought it was a strange isolated incident until they found a second praying mantis killing and feeding on a chick a month later. When they searched the literature to see if this predator had been documented before, they found a centuries-old report documenting a similar discovery. A more general Internet search turned up a number of non-scientific reports from Taiwan and Brazil of praying mantises eating chicks.
