A quarter of the land area in the Northern Hemisphere is covered by permafrost, defined as ground that has remained at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. Most of it lies within the Arctic Circle, a region of the world that is warming twice as fast as the global average, with major consequences for the rest of the planet. Arctic permafrost is thought to contain about 1.7 trillion tons of carbon, most of it in frozen organic matter. That's twice the amount of matter currently in the atmosphere. Warmer temperatures mean much of this material can be converted to carbon dioxide and methane as the ground melts and microbes get to work. This would lead to further warming and create a feedback loop of more melting and more greenhouse gas emissions.
