This is part of the largest fish hatchery ever discovered. It occupies more than 240 square kilometers of the bottom of Antarctica's Weddell Sea. Each nest is guarded by a notothenioid icefish, usually the father. In total, there are about 60 million nests containing more than 100 billion eggs. The site was discovered by Autun Purser of the Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven and described in Current Biology. Dr. Purser saw the first bird's nest during a dive. Further diving revealed even more. He and his colleagues then dragged the camera across the scene to explore its full extent. One of the reasons animals live in such groups is to eliminate predators. However, this could backfire when the predator is a modern fishing boat. For decades, there has been talk of making the Weddell Sea a protected area. The doctoral purser found another reason for this.
