They grabbed blankets, clothes and mattresses and rushed out of their homes at dawn. Thousands of people poured out of the city of Goma in eastern Congo, fearful of what would happen next to the volcano. Some fled east towards the nearby border with Rwanda. Others rushed west towards the Congolese city of Sak, some 20 kilometers away, as motorcycles, cars, trucks and pedestrians clogged dirt roads in Goma. Hundreds of people rushed to the port of Goma to take boats to the town of Bukavu on the other side of the lake.
