Veteran fishermen at the Landing Point in central Uganda still remember when they first came across this boulder between forest and lake in the 1990s, which they called Nnalubaale. There were nine settlers at the time. Today there are more than 600 people: brawny boatmen, happy children and stiff-cheeked women drying silverfish in the sun. But the drinking caves and half-timbered houses retain a hint of ephemerality. A fisherman, they say, is a wanderer, like a shepherd who is always in search of fresh pasture.
