In France, August is a calendar-emptying month faster than a chilled glass of rosé in St. Tropez. Emmanuel Macron isn't the type to sit on the beach even when he's on vacation, though. On the first day of this week, the French president spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his residence in the Mediterranean. That was three years ago in August, when Mr Macron met Vladimir Putin in the Mediterranean. Holding a bouquet of flowers, the Russian leader jumped up the stone steps to greet him. To the dismay of those who already believed in Putin's utter invulnerability, the visit confirmed that Macron's approach to Russia is at odds with that of much of the rest of Europe.
