News crews and documentary filmmakers often travel to city squares and transportation hubs to capture the sounds of ordinary people going about their daily lives. Polish director Pawel Lozinski took a different approach. Instead of looking for his subjects, they came to him. He was on the first-floor balcony of his apartment in Warsaw, talking to passers-by with a video camera on. (He reported receiving nearly 2,000 calls over a two-and-a-half-year period). He'll ask simple questions: where are you going, what are you wearing? Each is an invitation to interlocutors to share their stories. The result is The Balcony Film (pictured above), a series of insightful insights into the lives of ordinary Poles told in their own words.
